When I Came Into ADC, I Told Them “Don’t Build Anything On Peter Obi, He Will Still Leave” — Okonkwo
Former Labour Party presidential campaign spokesperson and chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Kenneth Okonkwo, has stirred political reactions following explosive remarks about former presidential candidate Peter Obi during an interview on SYMFONI TV.
Speaking during the interview, Okonkwo claimed he had earlier warned leaders within the ADC not to build the party’s political future around Peter Obi, insisting that Obi has a pattern of leaving political platforms whenever internal challenges arise.
According to him, immediately after joining the ADC coalition discussions, he cautioned party stakeholders against depending heavily on Obi’s continued stay in the party.
Okonkwo stated that Obi’s political history shows repeated movements across parties, adding that such instability could weaken any long-term coalition strategy ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The lawyer and former spokesperson for the Obi-Datti presidential campaign argued that political parties must be built on strong ideology and internal structures rather than on the popularity of a single individual.
During the interview, Okonkwo further alleged that Obi’s decision to distance himself from the ADC coalition confirmed the concerns he had earlier raised privately within the party. He maintained that Nigeria’s opposition movement would continue to struggle if leaders prioritize personal ambition over collective political stability.
His comments come amid growing reports of internal disagreements and realignments within opposition parties ahead of the 2027 elections. Recent reports indicated that the ADC-led coalition has been facing challenges following the withdrawal of key political figures, including Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, over alleged internal disputes and mistrust.
Okonkwo, who previously served as one of the official spokespersons for the Obi-Datti campaign in 2023, had earlier exited the Labour Party after accusing the party leadership of failing to prepare adequately for future elections.
The interview has since generated mixed reactions across social media, with supporters of Peter Obi criticizing Okonkwo’s remarks, while others described his statements as a reflection of the deepening divisions within Nigeria’s opposition politics ahead of 2027.
